WebCT
Get Started Using WebCT
E.T.U.O. is ready to support your use of WebCT Campus Edition and WebCT Vista. Regularly scheduled workshops are available and support teams (Instructional Designers, GTA’s and web developers) are available both centrally from E.T.U.O. and in many of the colleges across campus.
WebCT use can take on many forms – everything from the support of a traditional on campus course, to a completely online course with all material delivered electronically.
Instructional Design Help
If you are teaching a Hybrid or totally online course you will want to have help from an Instructional Designer to make sure you deliver your material in the most effective manner possible.
If your course is totally online you are a required by Distance Education to have an instructional plan on file to meet S.A.C.s requirements.
Requesting a WebCT course
However you will be delivering your course, you will need to fill out the Course Request form found online. This must be done every semester.
You will need to know the Section Number of your course and if you have used WebCT at UH before, you will want to know what semester you would like to copy as a template for your new section. This keeps you from having to start over again with your file creation every semester. You must notify your course scheduler to have the appropriate code put into the system identifying your course as one which uses WebCT. Your course scheduler will add a “G” code to the scheduling interface. This is necessary to make sure your students will be uploaded into your course.
Faculty workshops
If you are only using WebCT as a supplement, you can probably learn what you need to know by attending one of the Quick Start Workshops scheduled throughout the semester. This is a one and one/half hour session which will help you identify the tools you might need to use and show you how to add these tools to your course.
If you are planning on teaching totally online or a hybrid course, a regular workshop would be most appropriate as you will learn not only what tools are available, but also how to use the tool in a pedagogically sound way. If you find that no scheduled workshop fits your calendar, please feel free to discuss other options with the Instructional Designers. If your department needs a specific Workshop, please contact ETUO to discuss a way to arrange for this.
Support
Anyone using WebCT Vista or Campus Edition will have excellent support. The instructional designers for each college and the central group of designers are available to offer help and guidelines for how to use the tools. Each college has a group of GTA’s available to help you upload material, create quizzes, scan articles, etc.
