Software and Downloads

Below are commonly used software that students and faculty can download and use for free. In addition, E.T.U.O. works with Information Technology to provide U.H. site-licenses for programs especially useful to instructors. These are available for free to U.H. faculty.

Macintosh compatible notes software available for Macintosh computers.
Windows compatible marks software available for Windows.

Acrobat Reader - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible

For Mac and Windows. Adobe's freely available reader used to read Adobe PDF documents (*.pdf). Download Acrobat Reader from Adobe.

Hybrid Instruction Seminar - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible

For Mac and Windows. A video introducing and offering instructional tips on how to operate and set-up hybrid courses (*.qtl). Download the Hybrid Instruction Seminar.

Impatica - Windows compatible

For Windows. Impatica compresses PowerPoint presentations so they can be delivered via the web. It also allows you to add voice narration. U.H. has a site license for Impatica, so all faculty may use the software for free. Download Impatica from U.H. Information Technology.

Lessig Instruction Seminar - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible

For Mac and Windows. Intellectual property expert, Lawrence Lessig, offers his perspective and advice on higher education copyright matters Download the Lessig Instruction Seminar.

PowerPoint Viewer - Windows compatible

For Windows. This free download from Microsoft allows people to open and view PowerPoint presentations, even if they don't have a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint installed. Download PowerPoint viewer from Microsoft.

QuickTime Player - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible

For Mac and Windows. Apple's freely available media player used to listen to music and watch video in a wide variety of file formats. Download QuickTime Player from Apple.

Real Player - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible

For Mac and Windows. Real Media's freely available media player used to listen to music and watch video in a wide variety of file formats. Primarily used for listening to or watching real media files (*.rm) Requires that QuickTime be installed. Download RealPlayer from RealNetworks.

Respondus - Windows compatible

For Windows. Faculty use Respondus to create quizzes and surveys to be uploaded into WebCT and Vista. U.H. has a site license, meaning all faculty may use this software for free. Download Respondus from U.H. Information Technology.

Turnitin - Macintosh compatibleWindows compatible (online service)

An online service, no download required. Available for Mac and PC users. Turnitin is an online service for faculty that identifies papers containing unoriginal material and helps deter student plagiarism. U.H. has an institutional license for Turnitin, so faculty may use the service for free.

Visit the A.T.S.C. website for tutorials and information on getting started with Turnitin. Email turnitin@uh.edu to request the University of Houston ID and password you will need to create a user profile. Visit the Turnitin website for more information.

Word Viewer - Windows compatible

For Windows. A free download from Microsoft that allows people to read Microsft Word documents, even if they don't have a copy of Microsoft Word installed. Download Word Viewer from Microsoft.
